Identity: Who God Says You Are
Contemporary society finds itself in the middle of an “identity crisis”. The answer we find in to this crisis our secular culture has been labelled “Identity Politics”; an ideology which reduces human beings to a certain set of distinguishable identity markers where some identity markers are more prized and valued than other markers. Essentially, establishing a basic understanding of human identity based on our differences rather than on what is held in common. The embrace of identity politics has had devastating effects on our society contributing to the erosion of the family, moral truths, public discourse and genuine community. How shall a Christian respond? Thanks be to God! Scripture has an enduring and robust answer to our identity crisis. The bible begins with what unites all humanity: we are all created in the Image of God. The Bible begins with what unifies humanity not what divides humanity. The biblical idea of “identity” grounds the value of each individual in something more substantial than merely our sexuality, gender, ethnicity or culture. As bearers of the image of God, each individual finds themselves accountable to an identity which transcends our self-prescribed preferences, feelings, and passions. Join us in a 5-week series exploring the concept of Identity from a Biblical perspective as we discover together “who God says we are”.
